The Pangea Seed Project

RESEARCH INTO THE PANGEA SEED PROJECT IN RESPONSE TO TUTOR QUERIES ABOUT THE FURTHER APPLICATIONS OF MURALISM

"PangeaSeed Foundation’s mission is to harness the power of art, science, and creativity to generate awareness and stimulate dialogue to inspire and effect positive change surrounding global ocean environmental issues. We forge a synthesis between creative expression, nature, and society to (re)connect individuals and communities with our planet’s most important ecosystem by following our core values of sustainability, education, ecology, and design.

As Jacques Cousteau famously said, “People protect what they love.” – At PangeaSeed we strive to give people a reason to care and to become better stewards of the sea by bringing the oceans closer to people through the use of contemporary art and new media. Creativity is an incredibly powerful tool that can inspire individuals and communities across the globe, by providing a unifying voice that transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries."

The Pangea Seed Artivism project is something I have followed for a few years now, as I think it is a really effective example of how an organised approach to public domain art can subvert all senses of advertisement and corporate meddling and actually bring about increased awareness and positive change. The fact that the cause they highlight is very close to my own interests is also another reason I have watched the foundation grow over the years.

Now they enlist over 300 well known street artists internationally from across in 30+ countries for their "Sea Walls" public art festival which they run in conjunction with beach cleanup and education projects for the local community. The way they use figurative, illustrative art to revitalise a subject which goes quietly unspoken-of for many people is very intuitive, creating murals which are beautiful initially but then also still have a very important message to translate, making the campaign a lot more widely accessible and relateable. By mixing public art, activism and the excitement of an organised event, Pangea Seed is able to deliver their cause right into the hands of the very community and people who are able to make the difference. Off the back of this endeavour they are also able to sell artist merchandise and prints, 100% of the profits from which is then fed straight back into the project to help extend it's reach further.
